The mood of this work is immediately apparent from the first words that your eyes see. It takes one sentence for you to hear the low monotone voice of the clown and feel his repetitious daily routine which if you've ever done something you don't want to, you relate to mindless mechanical movements that are mentioned. I'm already a fan this is going to be a great ride.

Easily the hardest 200 pages I've had to finish. Sartre wasn't a writer as much as he was a thinker and sadly it shows. I did not enjoy this book but I'm glad I've read it.

It pains me to keep reading this book. I'm not enjoying it but i must finish. Again i see the similarities and contrast between Sartre's roquentin and Camus's meursault. Where Sartre gets swallowed and lost in his realization of existence, his not belonging anywhere and his loneliness, Camus accepts it and decides to enjoy it, thinking nothing of it and continuing to live. I hate this book i hate Sartre but, must end

God it's so hard to read this book. Not because of the subject but because Sartre wasn't a writer and it shows! The flow of the entire book is slow and it's boring i should've been done with it by now but it's too damn slow

Sartre is s cynical for me. It's interesting that him and Camus talk about the same thing, that being the pointlessness of life due to it's randomness and how as humans we are never free, because to be free means being able to do everything and once you're met with such freeness you can do nothing. It's a paradox that both of them encounter however where Camus gives a solution to live life and fight, Sartre says die.

How does he do it? How does he accomplish so much with such simplicity? It's masterful the way he writes but let me tell you that WHAT he writes is so gripping and wonderful. Characters feel alive, the places feel real you can see everything without even trying. This man is a genius but let me tell you about the story. Already I'm hooked, questions about technology and different lives pop up immediately. Amazing

Only Gogol would be able to bring a city street to life and make you feel dizzy. The diary of a madman and now this work of genius? I see now where Dostoevsky's influence comes from, it's Gogol. Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Boulgakov even Turgenev all come from one man, the Ukrainian Nikolai Gogol. If you have never given Gogol a chance i highly suggest you do ASAP

Wow what a great display of writing ability. Hats off to Gogol on this one it's a very good story. I have bought this collection of Gogol stories in one book but I'll be rating them and treating them as different books because unlike murakamis first person singular or hedayats buried alive, this is not a collection of stories but it's some collected stories written by Gogol. Unrelated to each other. This gets a 7/10

The predecessor to Dostoevsky and Kafka, Gogol is an amazing comedian believe it or not. The diary of a madman feels...well like you're reading the diary of a madman there is not false advertising here. The story of a crazed self labeled gentleman who falls in love with his boss's daughter is tragic, satirical and engaging. So far I highly recommend it

So far I'm really liking it which is rare since i don't like books that are stories with underlying thought i mean come on my favorite writers are Dostoevsky and Kafka, but the writing is superb. It is akin to murakami in the sense that it's such high level simplicity and fine tuned writing that you just don't get fatigued. I can't understand the people who got bored of this book, imo it's very well written.

20 pages in and I'm already on the verge of tears. Back in school i used to have a best friend like Lennie, big and strong, handsome too but not dumb just the furthest thing from academically gifted. I'd routinely get mad at him when we were studying together because he held me back and this book is hitting deep. Anyway this is a well written story worthy of being called magnificent. So far I'm a huge fan

Hesse captures the transition from childhood to teen, and from innocence to melancholy perfectly. It is written like a memoirs but it is fantastically beautiful. Not in the sense of scenery no, i mean it is beautiful from a sense of feel. The way Sinclair goes from loneliness to meeting max demian, then to loneliness and alcoholism with company, then back to loneliness and falling for a girl he doesn't know.Beautiful

MAGNIFICENT! max demain is such a fantastically written character that you can't help but feel drawn to this little boy who has everything: looks, strength, intelligence and wisdom. And yet for a boy who has everything he doesn't seem unreal. Hermann Hesse has enchanted me with only a few chapters, as murakami did a few weeks ago.

Simply amazing. The symbolisms are genius the subject matter is fantastic the writing is top tier and the difference between a Hermann Hesse and a Gustave Flaubert shows so vividly. A book is like a painting and every word is like a brush stroke. A good writer creates an amazing painting but a writer of top tier quality can even amaze you with every brushtroke i know it's a weird analogy but if you know you know.

I remember at the begining of the book i called Emma Bovary the stereotypical bored wife who doesn't know what she wants in life. WELL I WAS WRONG SHE'S A SUCCUBUS! She's the most unlikable character I've ever read about and I sat through creatures like marmeladov, the family of Gregor samsa, svidrigailov and even nastasia philipovna or madame blanche weren't this hateable. I know it's by design but she's made me mad

I hate Emma Bovary. Idk if Flaubert intended it or not but people who praise her for "embracing her womanhood" are idiots IDIOTS and nothing more she's not embracing anything she's just a multiple time cheater who doesn't even comfort Charles when his father dies and tricks him into sending her to Rouen for "council from Monsieur Léon" i can't stand how much Charles loves her and she just doesn't see it. I'm hurt

"She even asked herself why she detested Charles" the husband's sins of not noticing his wife's unhappiness and living a boring life as a hardworking country doctor bring out the worst qualities in Emma: melancholy by way of boredom and holding tight the embers of sadness and bad memories. Even when he noticed, he went from tostes to yonville to make his wife happier but follows the same life. Poor Emma, and Charles.

I'm sorry to say this and I know you'll take it the wrong way but, Emma Bovary is the stereotypical woman. She complains for no reason other than boredom, doesn't know what she wants and keeps sad memories with her without letting it die. It's sad really but Gustave Flaubert captured the bored housewife correctly, a woman who doesn't know what she wants and doesn't want to do anything other than sit and be sad. 10/10

Emma Bovary is a woman who sadly falls victim to romantic thought and ideas of a perfect world where she is a victim to bad chance. Léon, the embodiment of a man in love with an unattainable and taboo idea which tortures him and is symbolized by the fact that Emma lives on the second floor and Léon on the first, lodging with the chemist making her literally unavailable to him. So far, the book is wonderful but slow
