I decided to learn more about Howard Thurman after learning he was a major influence on MLK and the non-violence of the civil rights movement. The development of non-violence in the US has an interesting ancestory…William Lloyd Garrison & Thoreau to Gandhi to Thurman to MLK. In any case, Thurman was clearly an amazing man and I’ve just started this book.

Thurman felt that to the extent that organized religion made peace with the powerful of the earth, it was a peace made against the underprivileged. He questioned why ‘negroes’ would have anything to do with Christianity, the religion of the slave master, and came to divide the Jesus followers, those who related to the story of Jewish oppression by the Romans, from the followers of Paul, a middle class Roman.
