so already I would put this on a short list of books I've found helpful to give historical context to Western culture's present spiritual condition: Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue, Lesslie Newbigin's The Gospel in a Pluralist Society, and Tom Holland's Dominion. Probably Charles Taylor's A Secular Age belongs on the list, too, but I haven't read it :).

Jeremy If Taylor's book is too daunting, you could try Smith's How (Not) to Be Secular, which is a layman's guide to Taylor.

Yeah, I've heard about that one too--by this time, though, I've seen so many ideas of Taylor's cited. Like the time I saw Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail and was disappointed because my college roommates had already quoted all the best lines. All of them.
