A promising career, a loving father, and a beautiful fiance--here's hoping Edmund Dantes stays on this roll for the next 1250 pages.

I was thinking Eugenie Danglars and her music teacher were queer-coded, but at this point, it's not even coded lol How did I not notice the obvious lesbians when I first read this book? lol

Aweille! I know this is the exact opposite of what Dumas is trying to say, but revenge has never been so sweet!
Some day I hope to rise from the grave, present myself to my enemy and have them stumble out of my house in terror, screaming my name. Then as they return to their home, they discover that their own family has abandoned them because I was so in the right.

Pretty neat that one of best chapters in the book includes the earliest recognized description of locked-in syndrome (31 years before the first clinical report and over 100 years before the syndrome had a name), and it serves as a crucial plot point.
Also, hacking in 19th century Thrillers: Bribe the civil servant who runs the telegraph machine with a nicer garden, so he sends fake news and disrupts the market.

Is it really revenge if it isn't multigenerational revenge?

I forgot about the chapter where the Count gets a holy man so high on hashish in his underground lair, that a bunch of sexy statues come to life and eye fuck the man until he passes out from pleasure. #readtheclassics

It's so wild to listen/physically read a book for a couple hours each day over three days and realize you still have over 1100 pages to go. I blame Umberto Eco's lengthy introduction, which was, ironically, about how he thought Count of Monte Cristo needs to be edited down for modern audiences.
