So far Janine has been motivated by wanting to get out of the hospital and trying to get rid of Lenore. Janine was doing an exercise and trying to walk again and tried to tell Lenore it would get worse when she complained about the pain. Janine says "It's going to get worse, Lenore. You haven't seen anything yet." (53)

Lenore has been the antagonist so far. She not only has invaded Janine's mind but she also refuses to get out and has been causing nothing but trouble and stress. Lenore also keeps insisting that Janine is responsible for her death and has even started using Janine's voice to speak against her will.

The tone of this book so far is sort of frustration and confusion. Janine is frustrated because she can't get her dead sister, Lenore, out of her head and just get rid of her but also confused as to why Lenore keeps insisting Janine killed her and that it's all her fault that she is dead. "My death was no accident," Lenore insisted (47) after their dad calls Lenore's death a terrible accident.
