So far it's been a fantasy version of something like Mizoguchi's Life of Oharu, where the main character keeps getting dragged into scenarios where she suffers. Thankfully Sogolon is narrating the story so the emotional range is way deeper than Mizoguchi's insufferable one-note film

Finally reading this before his new book comes out and I'm loving it. One funny thing is the series of coincidences that lead Sogolon to witness everything important going on.
