I really like the descriptions of Jamaica, what the country looks like, what the people are like, how they celebrate special events etc. The story and the writing itself are okay.

The writing is still not really doing it for me, too descriptive of what happened instead of showing what is actually happening. I like that the story is told from two perspectives and that it covers many years, but it annoys me terribly when authors can't keep their own story straight. A girl who is 17 in 1937 can never be celebrating her 23rd birthday in 1946!
