This reminds me a little bit of The Others, if the kids had been in on it. There's definitely a creepy secret, and Veronica is the only one who doesn't know it.

the action scenes get a little sloppy here toward the end... one minute Veronica is on the balcony outside her room looking at the child down in the yard then just a couple of sentences later, she's taking the child hand to bring her back inside... don't see how she got off the balcony...

The characters are well written, the descriptions of the house detailed and beautiful, and the suspense palpable. The only thing out of place is that characters keep saying the phrase "or something" it jars the conversation being out of character for the time period.

"Outside a high, thin wail rose up, making her shiver. A wash of moonlight illuminated the filmy curtains that wafted in from the floor length windows. Veronica put her hand on her chest to calm her heart. A howl rose up. What is that? "

this is an extremely compelling read! And thus far the romance aspect has not developed, but I'm thinking it is going to be a romance in the real sense, not the trashy sense.
