Just got started, but am struck by the vast numbers of Poles deported to Siberia or just outright shot within the first few weeks of the Soviet/Russian invasion of Poland in 1939. Even killed Poles who were communists simply because they were Poles.

Aside from the obvious tragedy discussed, I'm struck by a few other things. Among them, just how naive Roosevelt was with regard to the evils of Stalin and Communism (one might be excused if he assumes that FDR gave such benefit of the doubt because he, too, supported socialist ideals). Also struck by how pro-Western German officers were rebuffed by FDR to make peace in the event they succeeded in killing Hitler.

While I was well aware of the overall horrors of life under the Communists as they invaded Poland, reading the detailed accounts of individuals' suffering is horrifying. We must always be wary of how much power we grant to any one individual or body. Watch out world.
