The Katyn Massacre 1940: History of a Crime
Aside from the obvious tragedy discussed, I'm struck by a few other things. Among them, just how naive Roosevelt was with regard to the evils of Stalin and Communism (one might be excused if he assumes that FDR gave such benefit of the doubt because he, too, supported socialist ideals). Also struck by how pro-Western German officers were rebuffed by FDR to make peace in the event they succeeded in killing Hitler.

The Katyn Massacre 1940: History of a Crime
While I was well aware of the overall horrors of life under the Communists as they invaded Poland, reading the detailed accounts of individuals' suffering is horrifying. We must always be wary of how much power we grant to any one individual or body. Watch out world.

The Katyn Massacre 1940: History of a Crime
Just got started, but am struck by the vast numbers of Poles deported to Siberia or just outright shot within the first few weeks of the Soviet/Russian invasion of Poland in 1939. Even killed Poles who were communists simply because they were Poles.

Ishmael (Ishmael, #1)
OK. What began as interesting has lost all story. It's an essay from the author on his beliefs/opinions. The gorilla was just a clever trick to get me to read it. But the gorilla is irrelevant after the first few pages. It could be anyone. I'll keep reading, but I have the sense that he thinks hunter gatherers lived in a paradise. Author clearly doesn't really understand history older than the Industrial Revolution.

Truly unique & engaging 1st 10 pages. Since then, it has turned into what I'll call gorilla exposition. We'll see. Mildly concerned that the writer has a utopian view of hunter/gatherers (I kind of do, too, but understand that they still had people in them and, therefore, by definition, were not utopias). I expect his critique of modern civilization is coming. Wondering what the gorilla's solution will be...

The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God
Dense with theological ideas and words. Best to read at a deliberate pace and to ruminate on the concepts.

Thus far this book seems to be directed to a leadership audience in church circles, those who set sermon and theological tone. And though it is written in more of an academic manner, it still conveys important information about the state of church beliefs today (as of its 1998 writing). I also hope it begins to lay out ways to improve lay believers' faith and daily lives as we accept truth.

Really enjoying this book. I like the references to the participants journals from different walks of life. Also, laughed at the Canadians complete disregard for rules put in place by French authorities during the siege (they were rules about shooting pigeons - just plain funny, except a fella died by accident).

Enjoying the firsthand accounts from the journals of everyday people who lived through the summer and fall of 1759 in Quebec and surrounding areas.

Not reading a book at the moment, per se. But I am savoring each article in my latest issues of Military History and Medieval Warfare magazines. Yes, I still receive them the old-fashioned way - in print.

1759: The Year Britain Became Master of the World
Still finding this author irritating. Filled with unsubstantiated claims and outright conjecture. In his discussion on Wolfe, he says that the general was no military genius. OK. Fine. But the proof he offers is that several of his initial attacks during the Quebec siege/campaign were repulsed. However, I suppose if I were a cheerleader for Wolfe, I'd respond that the general didn't stop there. He adapted. And won.

So-so thus far. Much conjecture as to motives and personalities of folks without back-up. Definitely taking today's sensibilities and projecting them back almost 300 years. Also, so far where the author offers opinion on strategic military matters, he shows himself rather uninformed.

Battle Flag (The Starbuck Chronicles, #3)
Main character, Nate Starbuck, is a spiteful, vindictive prick. The rest of his sibling figured out how to become responsible adults under the admittedly overbearing rearing of their father. But he seems to want to wallow in it and take it out on others. His treatment of Colonel Swinyard upon the latters recovery is a perfect case in point. Remains a good tale. Just loathe Nate.

I enjoy the series. Sad to see my favorite character, Pecker Byrd, wounded and out of the tale for a while. But the character Swinyard is far more interesting now. The main character has gone from being merely irritating to the point where I cannot stand him. He is petulant and among the most selfish folks in the book. He is no different than his "enemy" Faulkner in the series. Except Faulkner can be likable.

As I expected of a McCullough tome, I am truly enjoying this. He really puts the opening of the Northwest Territories to settlement in a new light. So far in my short reading time, he appears to make the case that it is among the most enlightened aspects of the American experience from its chief proponents in Cutler and Putnam to the NW Ordinance and beyond.

Not a book I'm reading. Rather it is the 20th novel I've written. A Fort of Thorns is available after many unexpected delays. Hope you all enjoy.
