I’m not sure I like the way this series has shifted to historical drama. The first two books were still in HR territory, while this one aspires to be something else. We’ll see if it works.

I’m starting to find the main couple incredibly dull…I wish Ashley was less condescending and Athenais a little brighter

Writing two sex scenes for a pairing that isn’t destined to be endgame, while one of the main romances of this book gets none was certainly A CHOICE™️
I would’ve preferred seeing leas of Eden taking advantage of Deborah and more focus on Pauline and Francis’s romance.

tfw you imprint on a secondary romance that you already know isn't going to be endgame
He saved her from a witch trial though!!

Lauren I agree, Stella Riley has beautiful covers. I'm curious to see where this book goes

The cover is a literal work of art! And dividing the book into parts like an actual play (entr'acte, first act, ect.) is a very nice touch! It's a much heavier story than the first two in the series, that's for sure. It seems Riley decided to ramp up the drama and tragedy with this one.

OLT Once you get past the first quarter (or maybe third?) of this, which is truly relatively dense historical fiction, it becomes more personal and you'll find yourself reading a lovely historical fiction/romance.

You're right! Just rounded the 20% mark and the novel does lighten up considerably. Despite its bleakness, the first part set the stage for a very interesting story so now I'm excited to continue

Great. I'm glad you made it to the romances. (I think there's more than one?)

Correct! Three if one also considers Deborah and Eden, even though he ends up with someone else in the following book...
