Slow going. "To say that the past two and a half days had been terrible didn't do justice to the meaning of 'terrible.'" (Chapter 12). OK, not that bad of a read, but that is the last sentence I read and it was funny given my context. It won't hit my DNF, but maybe I need to jazz up my reading time by spending more time with something else in parallel. I ended up re-reading most of the Matthew Swift series.

The characters are a little two-dimensional so far. "Surprise" relationships do not equal "character depth." I get the feeling the author can do much better ... there is good writing here, just not character depth.

Thank you, Carol! I suspect if I had a better understanding of Arabic culture, I would be able to find the story more intriguing. As it is, I'm completely blanking on many honorifics, ancient theological references, and cultural icons. Having said that, I felt the same way about Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" which is a difficult read, but one of the more profound books I've run across.
I'll finish this book, no matter what - but I might dip into your list of 4 and 5 star books that I haven't read. Those never steer me wrong!
