I love this book. It will take me forever, but I love the writing of Dostoevsky. Please keep in mind, that I strongly believe Tolstoy was a hack.

Slow going. "To say that the past two and a half days had been terrible didn't do justice to the meaning of 'terrible.'" (Chapter 12). OK, not that bad of a read, but that is the last sentence I read and it was funny given my context. It won't hit my DNF, but maybe I need to jazz up my reading time by spending more time with something else in parallel. I ended up re-reading most of the Matthew Swift series.

The characters are a little two-dimensional so far. "Surprise" relationships do not equal "character depth." I get the feeling the author can do much better ... there is good writing here, just not character depth.

"Commercial street runs through the middle of Provincetown and I walked past the neat New England stores selling lobsters and sex toys." Author needs an editor. Or maybe the author is casually letting us know of his side hustle.

I had to relisten (audio book) to this sentence a couple of times.

Needs an editor. Author told a story about how a Target salesperson could not understand that the author wanted a cell phone without Internet (this was evidence of how our culture has become Internet-centric). My first thought is maybe Target (the store) did not have what you want at all, but the salesperson is trying to find something close. Author later admits he found the only suitable phone elsewhere.

When a journalist decides to write a book like a newspaper article or blog rather than as an author.

Is it cliche: (1) to have a female assistant to a primary, male, evil villain and (2) the assistant becomes increasingly committed and obsessed as experiments require torture and murder of many victims?

Quickly becoming one of those "can't put down" books. Doesn't the author know that I have kids and a job???

First sentence includes a client saying he lost his uncle in a storm. "...probably drowned. Probably dead...I can't imagine how he could still be alive." "So what's the mystery?" I said. Awesome. Quite possibly the last thing I would have said...

Think "King in Yellow" with an unreliable narrator that is narrating documents from another, potentially less reliable narrator who is narrating a "fictional" film created by and focused on crazy people exploring a horrifying, impossible, and hostile environment arguably contained within a house. I'm enjoying this.

I've gotten a hook in the story (or the other way around). Cover is throwing me off (it is surprising how much the "Jack the Ripper" cover threw me off).

Interesting beginning for a "self help" book. I'm intrigued by the fact that the Amazon reviews are so high when it starts with a long (ish) scientific backstory. Normally these books attempt to arouse passions to help the readers invest in the value of the ideas before expounding on them. This is much longer and drier at the beginning. Hm!
