The history of the women is fascinating to learn. I only wish the author would keep herself out of the tales and leave the moral ruminations at the end of each story by the wayside. Especially when she may have gotten things all wrong — like the story about Charlie Parkhurst, where she didn’t even touch on the possibility that Charley was (what we now call) a trans man.

Women featured (so far):
Nellie Cashman
Clara Brown
Nellie’s story was super interesting and I was swiftly transported to the days of the Gold Rush.
Clara Brown’s story started off smoothly but when the author described Clara’s second owner(!) as “kind” & then proceeded to say that Clara grew to love living with the Browns, I had to pause and call bullpoop. Anyone who purchases another human is NOT kind.
