I first read this book 9 years ago, when I first began the study of art. I have by now read a fait amount on 19th cen French art, and have been teaching this material for the past 2 years — and so I decided it was time to reread this, with a more practiced eye jow.

This book contains a perfect blend of social analysis and formal analysis and just plain smarts -- without one jot of the jargon that one finds, e.g., in Clarke -- Herbert explains exactly what is going on in these pictures -- a really amazing book.
