I can't quite place my finger on why I don't like this standalone as much as the Clandestine Magic series. It has all the makings of a great story: a spunky, weird, albeit immature heroine with a unique talent. A grumpy, reluctant hero managing guilt and trying to right a wrong. Great chemistry. Cowley's trademark story-telling, if a bit inexperienced, this being her debut. Yet it's not the page turner I expected.

While generally entertaining, with an interesting concept, I haven't found this to be a page-turner like her Clandestine Magic series.

I find Cowley's works are always slow in the beginning, but once the big reveal happens, things pick up quickly and you end up liking or being blown away by the book in the end. I have a feeling that's what is about to happen now, now that the REVEAL has just occurred!

Sidebar: the cover needs changing. It does nothing to sell the book and is a bit off-putting to me.
