My least favorite part about farming memoirs is when people recount horrific animal encounters (horrific for the animals) and think they are being funny.

The writing repetition continues. She’s also obsessed with image and stereotypes— can’t imagine having a *poodle* or wearing an *orange hat* gasp! Perhaps I should consider this book was written 22 years ago, but we’ve come so far from this woman-kowtowing-to-grunting-men narrative it’s hard to go back. She’s also praising pioneers and omitting Indigenous people when talking of the land’s history, which tracks.

There is a repetitiveness to this writing style. A repetitiveness that I think the author is using for emphasis. Or perhaps I think she is doing it for style. Though I also think that this repetitiveness is killing me. Killing me slowly. Slowly I am dying.

Seeing as I will likely never own land to farm, let alone my own house, in my lifetime- I’ve decided the next best thing is to indiscriminately read every memoire I can find on the subject. Though sometimes it hurts.
