Amazingly captivating so far. Both characters leave me wide-eyed. I just know Paddy will need to be challenged (his views and experiences are too narrow, too cushy) and John-not-John--such a heart-wrenching mystery! Love the way the character is made compelling and only hints of his mysterious past are carefully revealed. He seems deaf and unused to using audible words--perhaps he came from a telepath community?

Give me man vs self, man vs man, even man vs environment, but man vs society just makes me spitting mad. I know we need to chose which things we agree with and which we don't, THINK about what we're doing, how we're living, how we're believing in whichever current society we live, but it's hard to get right in a book without sounding preachy; it's just not my thing. Unless it's man vs tiny society, such as family.

Love how Parry's worldview is slowly unravelling....

Interesting! Paddy says Jac is "changing his perceptions" (Jac's room didn't seem too white or too small before; now, it almost vibrates with an urgent sense of emotion starkness and desperate smallness. I don't think it's Jac per se: it's the growing depth of Paddy's inborn empathy, which grows as he connects and he feels for this man.

Interesting thought on psychosis: Paddy mentions how a strong mind consumed by fear and anger and pain can be taken down without any "need for psychosis." I paused, thing how true this is--in some minds, when it doesn't know what to do with trauma, it'll create a psychosis reality.
