I had to read a romance after that hard, hard chapter about Samuel Pritchard. Anything to repair my heart, broken by Jeffers several times over.

Reading this novel is like visiting family. I love it.

I remember when childhood/young adulthood was like this - full of promise and danger and excitement and boredom and barriers and rules and wild, agonizing unpredictability. I don't miss it but it's nice to remember.

I love me a great novel written by a poet. Also, that opening chapter was a beast. And also:
“Ailey, who will learn to honor a line reaching back to people whose names she will never know. To praise the blood that calls out in dreams, long after memory has surrendered.” Yes, my people. Yes.
