The first few pages are a beautiful description of movements in the night by animals and other natural phenomena. The latter pages detail her experiences with the night as a young child in Whakatane. The chapter features where she is living at present - the Waitakere Ranges. Such a lovely start to this book. I have a funny feeling I am going to absolutely delight in reading this book.

6pm - the time pubs closed, the time that all lights had to be switched off in the blackout period of ww2, the time that it gets too dark to keep hiking, the time that people stop and seek a place to stay.

This chapter focuses on "dusk" and is named with "5pm". The definition of dusk is explained, the history of defining different times of day with the setting of the sun. Throughout the chapter are references to Te Henga Bethells and then the Hawkes Bay and even a story about the writer getting lost in a bush in the west coast at dusk. Also mentioning throughout references to matauranga maori. Lovely read so far
