5% in a book of such heft is milestone, and I'll report my progress in such increments to keep myself motivated to finish. So far, I've learned that New York's govt at the beginning of the 20th century operated without any budget; and that a group of gentlemen uncovered fraud cases by walking around the city, counting bags of cement at construction sites, and running them against official records from the press.

This book clocks in at over 1200 pages, but size aside, any author who can make me read for half an hour straight about the intricacies of urban planning in New York in the first half of the 20th century takes precedence over anything else I am currently reading.
