It had deepened now to a royal blue, queen’s blue, the blue of the Madonna’s cloak, very deep in the east where night was walking towards them over the sea…” (41).

He was a small bustling creature with a round furry brown body set on inadequate legs…He suffered from a constant fear of being overlooked because he was so small…It was not possible to say of him, as people said of Spot, that he was a gentleman, because as a matter of fact he wasn’t, but he had a very great deal of common sense” (32).
