So far this book is compelling. Mixing real life characters (Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves) with other characters of a more fictional nature. As seems normal with such books, the descriptions of battle are dreadful.

This book was brilliant, but at times it made a very difficult read. The central character, Rivers is a progressive doctor treating people kindly and listening to their war experiences. Some of these experiences are recounted in the narrative, and they are horrific. But the real horror is contained in Rivers' visit to another doctor who 'cures' patient using electrical shocks administered in a bullying manner which I would have described as torture !
The story is wrapped up well, and there is an author's note about what is truth and what is fiction.
