Antonia and Jonathan have a baby girl and all is well. Evelyn only offered to propose so that Chris would act and ask Mary to marry him. They were wed. Dair returned from Barbados and carried Rory into the celebrations. She was pregnant with twins.

Chris convinces Teddy the duke is not an Ogre, and her father was mistaken. They also start a winter solstice fire to chase away all the evil spirits. Antonia goes into labor.

Chris and Mary have 6 days at a cabin in the woods to get to know one another. It is ended when Antonia & Jonathan arrive at Chris's house. Teddy is at Treat and up in the treehouse. Chris & Mary have to go to get her down.

Evelyn plans to marry Mary which would make her a countess. Traitor was Duke's secretary. They arrested him and the housekeeper, his partner spy, during excursion to Chris's fabric mill. Evelyn is a bit of a jerk now. He said he's coming back in a month to offer for Mary, and she can do whatever with Chris until then and told Chris the same thing. Teddy was to stay with grandmother w/o Mary this year.

Chris now fears his opportunity to form a relationship with Mary will be eclipsed by Evelyn's presence.

Chris is in Mary's room to find out who is searching there & stealing food. It turns out it is Evelyn. No idea why he has come here and why spymaster is coming next day. Eve figures out Chris's codename and begins toying with him. He cozies up to his cousin chatting in French as if they were still children. It's odd that a woman who so disliked the attentions of her husband responded so easily to a passionate kiss.

I was originally going to skip this book in the series since I wasn't really interested in Mary. However, I realized that if I wanted to know Evelyn's story or what happens to the traitor among the spies, I would need to read this book, because Henry's story would occur when he was older.
