I gave up on reading and switched to listening to the Audible version instead. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, but I’m finding it interesting. I can’t believe this was written at the time slavery was still taking place on plantations! The ideals put forward and the sympathies with negro women having their children taken feels almost shocking for the time.
