I am enjoying this book but I got waylaid by reading a few pages of The Book Thief when it arrived in the mail. I will be back Mr Banville but I have chosen another albeit temporarily.

Always when he had slid back the little door behind the grille-I can still hear the abrupt and always startling clack it used to make-he would begin by heaving a heavy sigh of what seemed long-suffering reluctance.
