This is very intense. There's no emotional distance. Lindsey Ryan is a woman who often thinks that death might be a release for her but cannot stand by and watch others suffer when she could help them. The people feel very real and that raises the stakes.
I love that she isn't a female clone of Jack Reacher. She's not invulnerable At this point, I'm not even sure she'll survive. But I know she won't stop.

I've barely started this book and the tension is already almost unbearable. This isn't a thriller that keeps hinting at dark secrets buried in the past to create tension. This is a book that bangs you face-first into a wall of unpleasant reality and promises that there's much worse to come.
The evil it confronts is depressingly ordinary but hard to fight. And the fight has already become personal and physical.
