Discourse promotes language development, academic understanding, and is way more engaging for students than just listening to the teacher all the time! I like how one teacher points out that dialogue matters for democracy. We need to provide learning environments where students can voice their understanding of topics and hear other people's perspectives.

Have them explore lots of samples to see what their end product should look like, as well. Make their thinking visible through a variety of ways.

Hands down the best book for educators so far!

"Any effort toward learners' independence is a better step than sustaining dependence out of fear or mistrust" (94). AMEN!! We have to create independent learners who have the endurance to struggle a bit before completing the activity.

Workshop model . . . best thing ever because the kids are highly engaged with activities, and I have time to confer with them. 😍 Nobody ever perfect this teaching gig.

I wish shocked that the college student majoring in education observing in my room has never heard of this book. Boy, her college professors are missing the Mark if they are not exposing them to the content in this book. I'm really enjoying this chapter on community and then hoping to learn some new tools for my toolbox.

I read bits and pieces of this last year, but I'm ready to read it cover to cover this year, and we are studying it as a staff more intentionally. It's full of good reflective questions and applicable ideas, so I hope I truly have the time provided to reflect, discuss, and implement.
