My creative writing professor once said the best stories happen when writers drag their characters through the mud.

What’s the point of writing mafia romances if the characters aren’t being put in difficult/scary situations, or constantly being challenged?! Without conflict and action readers are left with too much inner monologue. Which is starting to become a pet peeve for me.
