'She looked prim and virginal again (...) He wondered if she had regrets, but he would not ask her. He wondered if she was feeling euphoric—but she did not look euphoric—or as depressed as he was. Perhaps she was feeling neither. Perhaps for her it was as she had indicated, a mere physical affair. Perhaps her body was satisfied and her mind was looking ahead to whatever she had planned for the evening.' !!

'And he had a great deal more to look forward to. But he felt as if he had lost something too. Someone. Harriet. She was not the person he had thought her.' So far I rly like that this book confronts the wife vs mistress problem wrt purity & class head on. Like, he has sincere feelings for Harriet but they're also filtered through him being who he is - a wealthy, powerful man in a deeply patriarchal society
