I figured it out - the author is too impatient to pace the romance and instead goes NOW KISS which in itself isn't a bad thing but the will they won't they before it seems pointless when it's quite obvious they would from the first page is the author could do that and THAT happens a lot in fanfiction

this is written like fanfiction idk how to explain it but the prose is so similar to stuff I've read on ao3

the guy is playing hot and cold for literally no reason

"I said I wasn't interested in marriage so I won't be" - > proceeds to be interested in marriage and a romantic relationship - > pretends anyway and hurts the girl's feelings
