One minute they fight a giant human-eating willow, then they get lost in the fog, it seems that the battle is constant. The pattern is, a large amount of detail, which is slow and very explanatory, then a chunk of two or three different perils.

The theme so far seems to be journey, a long travel of adventure. The plot seems to be travel to destroy the ring, but they have many challenges, it's not so much survival, it's more like a task to complete.

The greatest internal conflict so far is frodo's fear of failure, his worry that the quest won't complete and he'll fail Gandalf and middle earth. The greatest external conflict so far is the willow that tried to eat Merry and Pippin.
