James Ellroy called this the ‘war and peace of dope-war books’ and I can see why. It is epic, huge in scale, covering many and their families over years. And while the war looms heavy, it is just a fraction of the book. The consequences are always there, but there is a lot of day to day life. Gripping and deserving of the praise.
