Just wanted to show one of the notes of Apronenia Avitia on a wooden tablet:
‘Smells I Hate:
Six smells I hate: the rank stinking of dried-up swamps,
A very small child spitting up mother’s milk on a tunic.
Vipers’ nests.
A he-goat mounting a she-goat.
The bodies of very old men or very old women even when bathed seven times.
Fleece twice plunged into a murex bath.”

And on she goes …

How about this recommendation of Apronenia Avitia to her daughter Flavinia. Apronenia seems to be a Machiavellian sort of woman in the 4th century:
“To gently and regularly control a man’s pleasures is to rule his head by ruling his moods. To rule his head is to rule his wealth, property, servants, palace and glory, if not dreams and thoughts. To rule his moods, palaces and glory is better than to rule his dreams.”

Jola 😄 I love it! Thanks for sharing, dear Hanneke. What an impressive collection of smells! I wonder if there are variations, depending on the number of times you plunge fleece into a murex bath, I mean does fleece plunged thrice smell differently? 🤯

Hanneke Dear Jola, it is so very strange to read those remarks by a 4th century Roman lady. I have actually no idea what she means with that fleece plunging! Sometimes there are remarks of a few sentences, then a little longer paragraph. Very strange that you can still appreciate her observations. She seems to be quite observant and quite a clever person.
