Interesting discussion of the morality and ultimate usefulness of the Federation's Prime Directive, and a Starfleet Captain's obligation to support it. Interesting to learn Picard was a lecturer, going from badgering (as Kirk felt) Kirk with questions as Spock might, to addressing him in scenarios. Also some suspensions in belief with plot conveniences, though the technical conception and description has been sound.

True to the Star Trek distinction, the scientific discussions seem robust. I'll have to check with the television series to see if Uhura was as unintimidated as described, characterized here. Kirk was impressed. And even Kirk was juggling immediate approximations of understanding physics and its repercussions. As he considered in an earlier chapter, gotta make informed, educated split-second decisions.

More quality characterological banter from the two captains in their differing thinking styles; some fun characterization of young Sulu as some cross-discipline, associative learning machine, always on the look out for more to glean; a useful understanding of Starfleet protocol and apprehension of more advanced technology, as well as its own iterative advancing technology in the description in the changes in fleet.

Now we're getting into dual timelines. Some fun description of orbital diving, with a mix of computers and physics. Some seeming characteristic banter and determination of strategy for mind games and argumentation/persuasion between Kirk and Spock, but it has me vaguely considering current and progressive science on the brain as regards Vulcan conditioning and cognitive capacities.

"Now there was a statement worthy of the old Picard, Kirk thought: staid, sensible, in need of a little prod now and then.
...
'Either we....or we risk landing on automatic like a pair of amateurs.'
'Healthy amateurs,' Picard amended. 'With all limbs attached.'
...
Decided he must have hit some kind of nerve in Picard, and that he'd have to remember how he'd done so that he could do it more often, Kirk input..."

'A forcefield is a forcefield is a forcefield.' Kirk reminded Picard. 'That sounds vaguely familiar.' 'All it means is that for the first ninety percent of any orbital freefall, we're strictly at the mercy of physics and computers.'
I do like this contrasting characterisation of both former Enterprise captains, and I feel resonant to what I remember of them. Kirk, nonplussed. Picard, a ball of questions and anxiety.
