Ok. So it gets even more unbelievable. It's 1869 Mallory would not be given tasks like she does in this book. Men, and women of the time would find it highly improper. It seems as thought she went to an alternate universe 1869 where women help catch murderers without someone telling them "don't worry your pretty little head about it, go back to your female pursuits"

So far I am not really enjoying this. I'm on page 85, and it's a lot of inner monolog. It has taken Mallory this long to think of the consequences of what has happened.
