Margery Allingham is a thoughtful and deliberate writer who chooses her words very carefully. From the first word a sentence knows exactly where it is going even if you don’t even after you have read it. I find I must read slowly and thoughtfully - not something which is necessary with most contemporary writers.

One needs to read her slowly and carefully to keep the sens of it — not common in more contemporary novels.
