Margery Allingham is a deliberate thoughtful writer who chooses her words carefully. From the beginning a sentence knows exactly where it is going even if you don’t even after you have finished reading it. One needs to read her slowly and carefully to keep the sens of it — not common in more contemporary novels.

From the first word a sentence knows exactly where it is going even if you don’t even after you have read it. I find I must read slowly and thoughtfully - not something which is necessary with most contemporary writers.
