Teenagers do not need controlling parents like when they were a child.
However, they need a coach. Someone to set boundaries, reflect with them and continue to improve. Let them grow and prepare them for what is to come. Prepare and talk through situations, let them speak up in controlled environments so they can handle themselves when those difficult situations arise (drugs, sex, etc.)

Key points so far.

The author grew up in foster homes. felt that no one cared. Until he met Rodney. Rodney didn't see Josh as a problem, he has him as opportunity. It was the first time Rodney felt like someone was looking at who he could become, not the troublesome child that he was..

Teenagers are changing, but they actually need to spend more time (not less) with their parents. And they actually want to.
