I’ve rolled my eyes at this so many times! I’m not far from the end now, about to start another section in the 50’s. It just doesn’t flow, doesn’t make sense and the characters are very one-dimensional.

Hmm. Have just finished the first section of Walter and Fawn's story (from the 1950's). It's a shame that this wasn't the main focus of the plot, switching forward to 'present' day, rather than the other way round. The writing is still very clunky.
