Dr S’s sense of humor, demeanor, and focus sound like someone on the autism spectrum. And the author’s reaction to those traits remind me of the ways in which neurotypical people tell me I’m weird or they don’t get my sense of humor or just give me sidelong glances that I’ve learned mean, “WTF?!.”

The author’s desire to have “a surgeon that was more normal, less quirky. [She] wanted the friendly, reassuring surgeon who would hold [her] hand and make [her] feel like a human being.” reminds me of all the fear of, and actual, rejection I and many of my autistic friends face when people just don’t get why we can’t act more like them. Grrrrrrrr
