The writing is good. I like what the story is trying to do. I did not know Japan bombed Calcutta in 1942 and kept doing this until 1944. I am going follow up on the Further Readings. I agree with the sentiment that sometimes our histories are kept away from us. It doesn't save us. Con: I am not too happy with way the story wraps up. I prefer Haroon and that cast to Maera + co.

My gut instinct about kid running away in India is fear. I cannot help but worry about all the way a child can be stolen away. A churail is light in comparison. My only pt of disbelief is Muhammad not waiting for his brother. I thought something was amiss from that pt. A part of me isn't sure that it isn't. I worried that everything and everyone he has met since then is just an illusion. I don't think so anymore.

Tonal compliments are more literary but situation and ongoings are other-wordly. Think Gold Diggers by Sanjena Sathian style. But topic and home life is more Djinn Patrol by Deepa Anappara. Very well written.
