The farm chapter is my favorite so far! It’s like a mix between Jane’s Country Year, Little House in the Big Woods, Boy by Roald Dahl, and Charlotte’s Web. 🤣

“The round table fairly groaned under the weight of good things. Plates loaded with buns, pots of jam, a dish of yellow butter and a large plum cake. Then there was a great round loaf, and a plate of biscuits and cheese, and bottles of pickles, and in fact everything you could think of. A great brown teapot was standing on a side table” (111).
I’m a sucker for these kinds of descriptions. 🤣

A reference to George Grossmith! His son was a classmate of Ernest’s.

This is interesting…Shepard and PG Wodehouse are near contemporaries (two years apart), and I’m finding some insight into Wodehouse’s novels already in Shepard’s memoir. Like cats-meat, which was delivered to neighborhoods at this time and is the nickname of a Wodehouse character.
