So far, the biggest challenge in reading Sorcerer to the Crown is a common issue with fantasy novels. There are SO MANY NAMES. Still, I’m really digging Zen Cho’s world building. She’s done a nice job easing me into the rules of this world and the mechanics/politics of its magic. Looking forward to seeing where the story is going.

I’m sad to say that this book is a hot mess. There is an absurd amount of talking at the most illogical times. I get the feeling this might all be intended to be funny, but the delivery misses the mark for me.

If this book wasn’t part of a reading challenge, I’d likely have bailed on it sooner. Really wish I liked it more. So many cool things. When it stays on task with the plot, it shines, but there are too too many detours. I have only 46 hours left in my library e-loan to finish it, too.

If Prunella wasn't a Mary Sue before this, she most certainly is now. What's worse is how much Zacharias looks more inept with each passing scene. That wouldn't be so bad, if people didn't insist how powerful and amazing Zacharias is.

The close to chapter 14 includes one of the most awkwardly worded scenes I’ve ever read in which a character realizes they’re falling in love with someone. Prunella’s thoughts are so formal as to be clearly unbelievable. A very forced moment that doesn’t feel earned.

I’m starting to realize that a lot of my disconnect with this book is coming from the way the narrative has to constantly fill in so many blanks. The formality and false politeness means half of what the characters say doesn’t mean what they say and has to be explained.

There’s an odd pacing to this book, especially now that Zacharias and Prunella are traveling together. The point of view keeps alternating between the two more rapidly. I’m not sure how to explain it, but the book feels too fast and too slow at the same time. I just feel too distant from these characters at this point.

Chapter nine felt like a hot mess. Prunella feels like she’s being set up to be quite the Mary Sue. I hope there will be an explanation for how she is capable of performing all the magic she does. So far, her skills make Mr. Wythe look incompetent.

***spoiler*** Dude. Mr. Wythe, seriously. You get attacked in a place almost NO ONE knew you would go, and it doesn’t occur to you that the schmuck who sent you there had to be in on the attack??? Really?!? Hoping this isn’t a red flag for the rest of the plot.

I’m finding Zen Cho’s writing style requires a little getting used to. The formality of it fits with the setting. It’s also more distant than I’m used to in most of today’s books, which tend to cling closer to the chosen POV, even when in third person.
