I'm seriously struggling through this book. It is just so slow, uninteresting, and humorless that I'm having a hard time liking anything about it. I'm really puzzled as to why the reviews are so high (3.99 Goodreads rating from tens of thousands of readers), and debating whether it's worth continuing. Sometimes I just don't get what everyone else is raving about, and this just might be one of those occasions.

You're absolutely right, Stacey. I've become much better at dumping books that bore/irritate me. On rare occasions though, I've ended up loving books that I didn't click with in the first 50, 75 or even 100 pages (one of the best examples is Big Stone Gap), so sometimes I do persist. But this book is just bleak and hopeless on top of being boring.
So many books - so little time - if it isn't working for you move on. I too in the past forced myself to complete a book wondering when it would get better has so many thought. I rated this book high. I loved the historical value - learning about the past. But that isn't for everyone. Find a new read.

There are way too many great books out there than talking to yourself while reading -saying why am I doing this? If it doesn't grab me, I won't waste more time resenting the fact I am still at it. I received no medals for finishing a book that bored me. Could be the books marketing re the numbers. Idk about that arena.
