My favorite book I have read this year is chasing Mavericks. This is my favorite book because it is inspiring and it has a universal theme. This book is also very entertaining and interesting. Jay Moroiarty is the most impairing person I have read about because he has overcame so many challenging obstacles. The message I get from this book is that with the right amount of determination you can make dreams come true.

This book is similar to another book I read about Mick Fanning. They are both books about professional surfers and they both had a hard upbringing. Both of their parents got divorced. Kelly Slaters family was poor and his dad was an alcoholic while Micks family could barely put food on the dinner table. From these big obstacles Kelly and Mick both became some of the best surfers in the world.

In this part of the novel Kelly starts traveling from Florida to California for surf competitions. He is not used to the bigger surf in California and gets out in the second round. His family was to poor to pay for his trip so his sponsor Quiksilver payed for his travel. Because he did so poorly Quiksilver deeply considered dropping Kelly from the team. Thankfully they didn't cause the next contest in Florida he won.

The character that I'm exploring about in the novel is Kelly Slater. He has grown by all the hardships he has faced. His dad is an alcoholic, his family was very poor, and him and his brother spent all of there time in the ocean. His dad left his family when he was drunk driving with kelly and his brother. He got into a crash and went to jail. All of these challenges made Kelly grow as a person and a surfer.

This book is about the upbringing of a professional surfer named kelly slater. He is easily the best surfer to ever live. I choose this book because I wanted to see how kelly became the surfer he is today. It is compelling because he did not have an easy life. His dad was an alcoholic and his family could barely afford to have dinner. I have become a stronger reader because I am more excited to read.

I thought it was very interesting when Kelly said that the waves never got above 2 foot in Florida where he is from and he still is one of the best surfers alive. This proves that you don't need to be raised at a place with perfect waves to become a pro surfer. I also thought it was interesting when he talked about his family background with his dad being an alcoholic.

In this part of Pipe Dreams, Kelly slater retires so that he can spend more time with his baby daughter Taylor. He still would compete in about half the contests on the world tour but wanted to put most of his time with his wife lLisa Ann and his daughter. He feels like he has turned himself into a better person by retiring from pro surfing.

Pipe dreams now talks about Kelly slater and his pro surfing career. He went pro right after he got sponsored by one of the biggest surfing brands, Quiksilver.
