Not a bad mystery, but the police are either incompetent or mean. There's a very cynical portrayal of the police force, especially the two Scotland Yard detectives, who are callous and totally lacking in empathy. The lead one is especially nasty and downright sadistic. It makes you wonder if Rees had had a bad experience with the police at one time in his life.
