while i can’t review it bc it is not a officially nationwide published work, ‘African American Survivors and Victims of Quantrill’s Raid on Lawrence’ by Jeannie Klein is a pretty remarkable collection of the untold stories of the African Americans that lived in Lawrence in 1863. While it is more academic than enrapturing, the amount of first hand accounts that Klein compiled was super interesting.

like reading it just makes one ponder what hiding spots you would choose and then regret while your town was getting burned. a lot of people chose under-the-sidewalk hiding spots and died for it. one guy prayed too loud and was caught. also the african americans that had been freed from in missouri were totally aware that a big pillage could happen any day but the people in lawrence just shrugged it off
