The humor in this is so delightful! Part of the humor is funny observations from Henrietta’s perspective, which are so delightfully childlike and part is from the narrator’s wry comments.

The opening of a new flower thrilled them, and the rising of the moon. A cold in the head was a matter of much importance, and a birth or a death shook the whole community to its foundations. This, Henrietta thought, was as it should be (114).
