What differentiates humans from animals is that humans can think. Thinking is self-consciousness.

Consciousness is the awareness of an object. Self-consciousness is the awareness of the self. Reason is the awareness of the other as being part of the self.

I am I is thought. Animals cannot think because they cannot say I am I. Parrots could, but they do not make the connection between the statement and their self.
